Capsule Geology

The Hewitt Point occurrence is located near tide water on the southern tip of Hewitt Point in north eastern Fanny Bay, on the west side of Phillips Arm.

The area is underlain by a persistent band, greater than 12 kilometres long, of stratified metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Quatsino and Karmutsen formations (Vancouver Group). The band trends north- west and separates Jurassic to Cretaceous Coast Plutonic Complex rock of two different compositions, diorite and granodiorite.

Locally, a number of pits, a trench and a water filled shaft near tide water have exposed an area of phylite, biotite schist, chloritic chert with epidote veins and lenses hosting a shear zone with quartz, pyrite and chalcopyrite.

In 1981, a rock sample (F-9-2) assayed 6.45 grams per tonne gold and 9.3 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 9665).

The area was originally explored in the late 1890’s in conjunction with the nearby Doratha Morton (MINFILE 092K 023) mine. Numerous pits and shafts were completed in the area during the early 1900’s. In 1981, Long Lac Mineral Exploration completed a program of rock and soil sampling, geological mapping and a 14 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the area as the Fanny claims. In 1983, Bute Joint Venture completed a program of rock and soil sampling, geological mapping and ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys on the area as the Koop and Strider claim groups. The area was prospected as the Cordero property in 1991 and 1992 by Ripple Creek Resources. In 2008, Cuda Capital completed a 561.4 line-kilometre airborne magnetic survey on the area.
